For Immediate Release
June 14, 2007, Washington, DC – On June 14, more than 70 employees from accounting and consulting firm Beers + Cutler taught students at Westlawn Elementary School in Falls Church, VA, about saving, budgeting and other aspects of financial literacy through Junior Achievement’s JA in a Day initiative. JA in a Day is a unique program that allows volunteers to teach all of the units of Junior Achievement’s (JA) seven elementary school programs in an intensive one-day experience.
According to research conducted by JA Worldwide, one-in-ten teens, some as young as 13, have access to credit cards. During the course of JA in a Day, students learn about the responsible use of credit, as well as other aspects of financial literacy, including saving, banking and budgeting. For example, students in the second grade learn about "Our Community" and have a chance to see how money moves through a community, creating jobs and generating tax proceeds that pay for schools, parks and streets. In fifth grade, students study "Our Nation," where they begin to learn about economic concepts such as opportunity cost and supply and demand.
"As a society we simply don’t accept it when a young person leaves high school without being able to read, yet every day we have young people leaving school without knowing how to balance a checkbook, open a bank account or understanding how interest rates work," said Ed Grenier, CEO of Junior Achievement of the National Capital Area (JANCA). "Partners such as Beers + Cutler are helping us teach young people these crucial life lessons through initiatives such as JA in a Day."
"The JA in a Day program was a perfect fit for our professionals who deal with a broad range of financial issues on a daily basis. We have great respect for the values and lessons Junior Achievement instills in our young people and we hope the program was as fulfilling to students as I know it was for everyone who participated," said Ed Offterdinger, managing partner, Beers + Cutler.
